origami | ɒrɪˈɡɑːmi/
the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures.
Origami has been practised since the early 1600's. The art of folding paper planes links closely to origami. One of our Red Bull Paper Wings SA Qualifier judges is Ross Symons, also known as @WHITE_ONRICE on Instagram. He's a modern origami genius.
“Contestants are folding and designing something with the goal of it being aerodynamic. Paper plane folding is a sort of origami. It's a technical art, but everyone can do it.”
Any tips from his side? “When it comes to folding paper planes, less is more. You need to try and make your plane as narrow and as thin as possible. Of coarse, heavier and more aerodynamic for distance.”
